Things are looking up...

And for once that isn't sarcasm. For someone who works at a company that may not exist within a couple of years, I had a pretty good day. This included getting a free advanced copy of David Sedaris' new book (coming out in June), that was signed! My boss is very cool. The other good thing today was that apparently in my yearly review I'm getting an Exceeds Expectations, and so will be the only person in management to get a pay raise this year! I still don't make much, but hey, every little bit helps, right?

Angelina is awesome

Ok, I have to admit. I wish I had her life. Angelina is so effing awesome. Love her! I can't get my damn pic to load or I would include one of her in that yellow dress.

The trouble with motorcades....

Besides the fact that I shake my fist at Dick Cheney driving by every morning on his way to the white house...

So a friend of a friend works for the secret service and on his very first detail, he was driving one of the large SUVs while escorting the prime minister of a rather important European country. As they were heading to the embassy, they were driving through a residential area and a slow cat started to cross the road. Unfortunately for the cat, motorcades are not allowed to stop for anything or swerve or else everyone will assume there is an imminent threat and react accordingly (with very large guns). So the poor guy had to run it over. Now his nickname is "pussy killer".

My Brother Is An Only Child

So its so freakin hot here that I went to the movies to just to get some cool air. And since I didn't feel like driving anywhere, I just walked over to the local super artsy theater, which is playing that Italian fascist/communist brothers movie that i think I told you about Dodie and you said not to go see cause it sounded depressing boring and awful. BUT it turns out that its in fact totally awesome, and the best foreign film I've seen in awhile. Sometimes I just long for super artsy movies (although not too artsy - like this preview that I saw for a movie that seems to be about inbred people in the south or something awful - http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/shotgunstories/trailer/ - this is probably the scariest trailer I've seen in awhile). So anyways, My Brother is an awesome movie. Has its funny moments, and of course its expected tragic but uplifting European ending (yeah, I know that sounds like all of kinds of awfulness but I swear it isn't!). Its beautifully shot and has excellent acting. I realize you probably won't jump up and run out to go see it, but at least watch the trailer and add it to your netflix queue! http://www.apple.com/trailers/thinkfilm/mybrotherisanonlychild/ (and yes, I realize the poster I put here is clearly spanish but I couldn't find an English one and this one is cooler than the Italian version.)

10 Things You Didn't Know About Jacoby Ellsbury

besides the fact that he is adorable

Wry British take on the allure of baseball

From the BBC: "At the same point in the same innings of nearly every major league game that is played anywhere in America, the spectators rise to their feet and sing along to the same song, just as they have done for years.

It is called Take Me Out To The Ball Game, even though it is always sung by people who are already in one.

And the tradition is known as the seventh-inning stretch because it is sometimes accompanied by a kind of half-hearted, shuffling callisthenics.

Imagine that, after the tea interval in every cricket test match, the crowd performed a primary school music-and-movement session to the tune of My Old Man Said Follow The Van.

This is still America though, and at my local stadium the playing of this timelessly charming song is sponsored by an oil company.

Take Me Out To The Ballpark, by the way, has an interesting history.

It was written 100 years ago and became well-known in America because cinema audiences took to singing it when they still had to endure maddening pauses as the projectionist changed reels of film."

Trippy new trailer...

Lee Pace seems to have inexplicably stumbled into a Pan's Labyrinth-type movie whose plot could be described as a little vague at best. Check out the triptasticness.

Take me back to the weather, fool...

Okay, I get that my company has to cut some costs in order to fully invest in the various things that are supposedly going to save the company, but this is kind of crazy. We used to have a link to the weather channel at work. Now we have this thing called 'Simple Weather', which basically tells you about as much as you could figure out by sticking your head out the front door. If you think I'm kidding, check out the guys who run it (presumably out of their frat house).

Nice graphics guys!

are we just cheap dates or un-cultured??

From the Economist
"ICELAND spends proportionately more on culture and recreation than other rich countries, with private and public spending together touching 10% of GDP. Its government lavishes over twice as much as others on providing sports, arts and recreational facilities for its citizens. Britons splashed out most on household items such as tickets to sports and arts events, CDs and DVDs, gardening and pets. Generally, wealthier countries devote more disposable income to leisure pursuits; Ireland is an exception."

Introducing...

Once more your dear sister is proving she is ahead of the curve...this is Marc Andre Grondin. Yes, he is French-Canadian. Yes, he will be in one of Soderbergh's two Che films. Yes he is awesome. Was in a FC film called CRAZY, which is quite excellent. Actually watched it a year ago, but I think I read in the trades that he booked another role. Presuming that he starts taking more English speaking movies, he will live up to the title as the Canadian Gael Garcia Bernal. take note (just like we did with White Teeth oh way back when...)

Very, very blonde...

...is the color hair de notre mere maintenent. It's not a little bit disturbing. I keep telling her it looks 'cute' with a manic grin plastered across my face.

remind me never to have twins.....

"you're just going to feel a lot of pressure" said the OB soothingly to the mother, right below she stuck her arm up to the elbow into the woman's uterus a la James Herriot to remove the 2nd twin who was of course, breech. the baby was delivered, with difficulty, in a huge gush of blood, butt first.
it was at this point that my medical student turned as green as the scrubs she was wearing and had to leave the OR. poor thing had never seen a delivery before and i am pretty sure after seeing that, will never have sex again.

the world is really too small

so my dear ch-ch-charles, was reading about MR's dad online on the mistral website and now have a good feeling about this guy. (off the subject, his dad went to suffolk law, which just makes me titter thinking about the line in the departed about suffolk night school, which was so hilarious b/c it is true). i know MR may look slimy but i'm sure he is a sox fan. go for it. plus he knows MP, who, omigod, helped produce an oscar winning movie.

when animals attack

i shouldn't be laughing at this, but I can't help it. HAWKATTACK
