Irish time

Its not even March and yet the grocery store is already putting up St. Patty's Day displays of like Guinness and Irish Cheese. I found this very odd. Its like they think every holiday needs to be celebrated for a full month or something. And there aren't even very many Irish here in LA.

Not sure why this was my absolute favorite part of the movie...

But it was. I liked it even better than the intro, which was a little bit of a Sorkin overload. Now with an a cappella overdub. Awesomeness ahead.

Best Oscar related quote ever

From Banksy:

"I don't agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I'm prepared to make an exception for the ones I'm nominated for," he said, adding: "The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me."

Why is it that you inevitably look your worst when you run into your crush?

Having gone on a 5 hour hike through the tropical rainforest, followed by a 5 hour bus ride during which the woman in the seat behind me vomited profusely and repeatedly all over the bus, we stopped in a coffee shop immediately upon arrival in town as all of us were starving, having not eaten since breakfast. And, of course, ran into the guy I sort of have a crush on having coffee with his parents.

Great, you want to hug me while I smell of sweat, insect repellent, diesel and there is a high possibility that I have someone else's vomit in my hair. And now introduce me to your parents. Great.

HAPPY FRIDAY

here is a little treat for Friday!

So I haven't watched very many episodes of Community...

But if they're going to make jokes about Reading Rainbow complete with Levar Burton I might have to give it another chance...

"Sultry Eyed Will"

Because it is Friday. And because I lurve him. And because Charles sent me tantalizing emails suggesting that TGW is vv good lately.

OH MY GOD!!!

So this makes the music junkie in me very, very happy. I mean, a combination of Florence and the Machine and The XX?? Epic win.

Why Lisa Edelstein is awesome

Not only was she super sweet when I met her at the Save The Children event, now she's done this.

Noticed you the minute you walked into the room. White striped shirt, tie, and furry arms. We sat through lecture and spoke briefly afterward.

- m4w - 25 (Astoria)
We both purchased owl statues today. You are the classy looking dame in a red dress. I am the mustachioed gentleman. I think we should meet up and discuss further wildlife decor.

Me, on the Other Side

Got total flashbacks to my job at the Comparative Zoology lab. Extracting DNA from those giant cactus beetles.

Plus she kinda looks like me, only a little more cracked out. (Should I dye my hair red again?)

And here I thought my love life was messed up???

Happy Valentine's Day from Fringe.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY YOU GUYS!!

Awesome collision of musical worlds

So you all know how much I love Dido. (Her brother's name is Rollo. At least, les parents did not do that to us. And she married a man named Rohan, more proof that there is truly a match for everyone.) And I love AR Rahman. (Another aside. The other day was playing songs from my itunes to try to amuse the kids who all decided to crowd into the office and watch me create pediatric palliative care powerpoint slides and review PMTCT protocols. They absolutely loved Shakira and Jai Ho. Were totally singing along. Abs adorbs.) Anyways, Dido and Rahman have a song, "If I Rise" from 127 Hours.

But, because Dido is about to have a baby, Florence Welch (!) is going to be performing it with Rahman at the Oscars. All around awesomeness.

Pick your cupid

I can't decide if I'm old-fashioned or desperate.

I love Cee Lo Green and everything he chooses to be...

I die laughing

Cheer up, Es!

Winter will be over soon! We will rescue you from the Pit of Despair! Let's move to JP when I return to the US.

Really, PBS?

Now you've got Samantha Jones, Scully, the other Mr. Darcy and Professor Slughorn in a series together? Merlin's beard, indeed.

I hope that I will be so badass when I am 82....

Noam Chomsky. Continuing to tell it like it is and point out uncomfortable truths. "It's not radical Islam that worries the US -- it's independence."

Most frightening paragraph: "Unmentioned is what the population thinks – easily discovered. According to polls released by the Brookings Institution in August, some Arabs agree with Washington and western commentators that Iran is a threat: 10%. In contrast, they regard the US and Israel as the major threats (77%; 88%)."

Also, did you guys see that the Muslim Brotherhood finally decided to get involved.....

Best nickname ever

Skeevy Bowling Alley Guy or S-BAG for short.

I'd just loiter in the corner looking fab. As is my wont.

“In many ways I felt the work was done around me. I just drank lots of tea. I’d ask if there was anything I could do and they’d say: ‘Not really.’ So there was lots of tea for Tommy. Then they’d call me over and say: ‘Can you jump off this?’ I’d say: ‘Absolutely!’, then I’d just loiter in the corner looking fab. As is my wont”

aka the best Tom Hardy quote ever.

15 newly discovered Dashiell Hammett short stories to be published

I'm sure you'll be in noir heaven, Es!

Extract: So I Shot Him, by Dashiell Hammett

Rainey screwed himself around in his chair to see us better, or to let us see him better.
I was sitting next to him, a little to the rear. Above the porch rail his profile stood out sharp against the twilight gray of the lake, though there was nothing sharp about the profile itself. It had been smoothly rounded by thirty-five or more years of comfortable living.
"I wouldn't have a dog that was cat-shy," he wound up. "What good is a dog, or a man, that's afraid of things?"
Metcalf, the engineer, agreed with his employer. I had never seen him do anything else in the three days I had known them.
"Quite right," he said. "Useless."
Rainey twisted his face farther around to look at me. His blue eyes – large and clear – had the confident glow they always wore when he talked. You only had to have him look at you once like that to understand why he was a successful promoter.

Saturday night musings

Beer tastes better on the equator.

Ah, childhood memories

Did anyone else catch this on the beginning of Fringe the other week? (Finally was able to download an ep!)

I love this song!

Anyone else find this ironic?

From the BBC: "Multiculturism has failed. David Cameron says Britain must abandon multiculturalism and robustly defend liberal Western values, in a speech on the causes of terrorism."
