Peabody Essex Museum

So I went to visit the Peabody Essex Museum today after I dropped off la mere at the airport. I really wanted to see this Hudson River School exhibit they have currently which has some spectacular landscape paintings. They also have a bit of maritime art, silver (of course), and a lot of china. I particularly liked, Shopping by Judith Lowry, a contemporary American Indian artist.

Afterwards I planned to do some Christmas shopping in downtown Salem. (The stores have lots of eccentric creepy stuff that I thought would make for good presents.) Unfortunately, somehow I forgot what time of year it is and after I was almost knocked over by a crowd dragging a screaming, shackled Goody Good impersonator down the street, I decided I had to get out of there. Poor Salem.

Luther bandwagon joined

So at your suggestion, Es, I decided to watch an episode of Luther. LOVED Idris Elba in The Wire, and love him even more with his real accent. (He is so incredibly sexy. Charles, you must watch too.)

Wildwood Chronicles

So Colin Meloy wrote a children's book called Wildwood. A supposedly whimsical children's book with just the right amount of darkness. Illustrated by his wife, Carson Ellis. (You know I love her work!) Potential b-day present for Es????

A mini-excerpt to whet your appetite:

"Chapter 1: A Murder of Crows.

How five crows managed to lift a twenty-pound baby boy into the air was beyond Prue, but that was certainly the least
of her worries. In fact, if she were to list her worries right then and there as she sat spellbound on the park bench and watched
her little brother, Mac, carried aloft in the talons of these five black crows, puzzling out just how this feat was being done would likely come in dead last. First on the list: Her baby brother, her responsi- bility, was being abducted by birds. A close second: What did they plan on doing with him?"

They also have a playlist to accompany the book and it includes a song by Fairport Convention, which I thought was just some weird group, like Schooner Fare, that only our parents liked because they saw them perform in the high school auditorium or whatever, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they are actually hipster cool. Though seriously, I loved Jewel in the Crown and might go see if it is on itunes right now....

But What is Burn Notice as RFK

In J Edgar. At least he is actually from Mass. maybe the accent won't be too horrible....

Is it wrong that I find this kinda intriguing?

There might be something seriously wrong with me....

Charles, you are never allowed to see this movie!

Even though I loved it. (A film about doctors! Fighting viruses!) However, it made me want to run out and stock up on MREs, batteries and hand sanitizer....

Depressing, but pretty

I know I should hate Lars von Trier and all that, but I think I want to go see Melancholia. 2 Skarsgards and a Sutherland. Parents behaving hideously at a wedding. Kiki Dunst as the Virgin Almost Suicide all grown-up. Plus the apocalypse. And it looks pretty.
